05 Lube oil pump failure
Hey guys my name is Dan, been following on here for awhile now but this is my first post. I seem to be haveing some problems and could use some advise. I took off from a stop sign and stepped on the throttle, right before i pushed the clutch in to shift gears the turbo got real loud it puffed some grayish white smoke and then the engine died. I tried to restart the engone and it started and ran for about 10 seconds and died. When it restarted it had a severe howling noise coming from the engine, I thought for sure that the turbo grenaded. I towed the truck home and removed the turbo, completely disassembled and inspected, found nothing. Put turbo back on and now truck wont start only crank. I noticed that there is now a bad oil leak coming from the front main seal. This is what leads me to beleive something is up with the oil pump. The oil pump failed causing the high pressure oil pump to loose oil supply therefore it wont start. The turbo noise may have been because the vgt solenoid lost oil supply and the chattering/howling noise was the failed oil pump. This is what i can make of my situation does anybody else have any other thoughts. Think ill remove the damper and oil pump tomorrow to inspect. By the way i have already done the updated sct, dummy plugs and stand pipes about a year ago. Oil level is full and oil filter showed no signs of contamination.

if you have a bad oil leak up front now then it probably hurt the oil pump housing, look for any weird marks on the pump gears to see if you can narrow down what caused the failure. Your assesment of the HPOP is spot on, even if the low pressure pump fails there is enough oil in the HPOP resivoir to keep it running for a few seconds.

Got another update: I pulled the engine and tore down, removed and inspected all the lifters and they were all ok. So i guess i oversped the engine causing the oil pump to explode. So i took the opportunity to install arp head studs, it was really easy with the engine out and i put a south bend single disc clutch in it too. When i started it up the turbo made an awful sound, the turbo went out when it lost oil pressure too. I did some research and found the rebuild kit from garrett. I was able to buy it at cost through my work for 70 bucks and the rebuild only took about an hour. Truck is running great now and thank you guys for all of the help that you ave me.

I think i was over 4500 rpm. It only revved that high twice and both were on wet pavement, the second time is when the oil pump failed. Ive been told that with i hot tune it rev too fast for the rev limiter to react. On wet pavement it was practically like free revving but worse because it had 25 psi boost and with all that boost there is more fuel pushing it even faster. It was kinda like the perferct storm. I think if i had an automatic trans it would have been ok, it would have shifted maybe.
