2003 F-250 Super Crew 4x4 6.0 Diesel Power Issues
Okay guys I hope someone can help me with this issue I am having. I am new to this site but you guys seem very smart
I have a F250 4x4, Supercrew, 6.0 Diesel. It is a 2003 and I blew the turbo at 80,000 miles in Sept. 2008. It was under warranty so local ford dealership replaced the turbo and the EGR Valve. I haven't had really any problems with it since to have it back in the shop. After about 10,000 miles on the new turbo it seems to whistle constantly below 2000 RPMS. If I get on it and stay at about 2500 RPM's it doesn't seem as noticeable.
I use this truck primarily on weekends for cutting wood and hauling my whole family long distances or when we all need to go somewhere together. It gets about 300 miles a week if this helps.
I was cutting wood the other day and dropped a couple of trees i needed to drag to the edge of the field. I hooked up chains to the truck and logs and put in 4x4. After chain was tightened the truck wouldn't go above 1500 RPM's. It would not blow smoke nor any of the 4 tires would turn. I do have lock out hubs. It seemed like I didn't have the power to turn any of the tires. The truck just seemed to sit. I was pissed off. What good is a 4x4 truck if you are stuck and don't have the power even to turn the tires. I have 285/75/16 tires on the truck so they are not over sized. I did notice that after trying for about 5 minutes of the truck not moving and staying locked to the tree that was free on the ground that the transmission temperature gauage was at the peak or almost at the "h" mark. I was in "Drive" the whole time when trying to pull. I have noticed this same thing on several occassions in the past but this was the first time the truck wouldn't even turn the tires. Usually in the past if I have it floored for a 1-1.5 minutes the tires eventually start to turn and it seems like I have all the power the diesel should have. Do I have multiple issues going on? Once I unhooked chains and drove a few hundred yards the transmission temp when back to normal! Please help. Where am I getting all my power loss? Is there anyone that anyone recommends in central missouri that works on diesels and are good at it?

Did you put it in tow mode when trying to pull, it lets it rev up a little easier. Never keep it floored and not spinning the tires, the trans will cook like that.
I would test the FICM, there is a sticky at the top of the 6.0 section that tells you how to do it, takes aout 20 minutes with someones help. A weak FICM can cause this , how is the truck running otherwise.

Thank you.
I will definitely have to test that. The truck otherwise seems to be running alright. It gets me from point a to point b with no problem. Every once in a great while on take off if cold it blows a little black smoke and almost stalls for a few seconds but then it seems to kick in and screams with power. Smoke is gone

Pull the EGR valve and clean it again too. I would also check the EPB sensor and tube out. I've seen this lower power issue before too. I've seen it so bad that a truck with nothing hooked to it had trouble going through a 2" rut in a yard. Yeah that's 2 inches, not feet. It wouldn't even spin the tires. Once on the road and rolling though it seemed to run fine.
As for the whistle you hear, that's common with the 03 turbos. You probably never noticed it before because the turbo was probably gummed up with soot, which is why it was replaced anyways. 03 are notorious for sounding like a jet engine.
I wouldn't trust the factory "gauges" for anything honestly. RPM is probably the only accurate one.
I can burn all 4 of my 35x12.5x17's on pavement, so yeah, something is wrong here.
