Hmmm interesting find. Through a couple of sources I found, 36.3 for the 300 and 40.0 for the 12v Cummins. Makes sense it would be about 3-4 inches longer after doing the swap.

Easternaggie, what engine did you replace on your truck?

Same engine we're talking about, 300 straight six. Good engine all the way til the time I pulled it out and sold it, I'm sure its still doing good to the current owner.

How did you guys do your engine speed sensor to work on the ford tach

I used a FordCummins.com tach kit for mine. Works great, but I'm not especially fond of how bulkey (and potentially out of balance) it is. The Destroked.com tone ring setup looks quite a bit cleaner, so you may look at that one as well.

I'm looking into whether a 6.7L Cummins balancer will work because it has a 58 tooth tone ring built into it...which I believe will work with the 7.3L IDI tach pickup sensor.

I'll have to look into the Destroked tach kit then. I'm still running tach-less at the moment, but its been on my to-do list for a while.

The tach on the idi reads of the ip I thought, never really looked at it to close, what about wiring my tack to the cummins sensor?

The tach pickup on the IDI reads the injection pump teeth (hall effect sensor, I believe) so essentially it just needs a tone ring with the proper number of teeth (or peaks) per rotation of the CRANK (the IP turns half crank speed, so a tone wheel on the crank would need HALF the number of teeth as on the pump gear since it takes two rotations of the crank to make one rotation of the pump in the stock IDI configuration or reading off the pump...if that makes sense).

As for making the cummins sensor work with the Ford tach....I'm not sure, but I'd like to know if there's a trick for that as well :humm:

I agree. But its doubtful that its an easy process (or even possible). I'm sure someone has already thought of this and researched it and found it was no good, otherwise Destroked and FordCummins wouldn't be pushing for us to use the Ford sensor. Just like with the water temp and oil pressure sensors, I had to pull out the Dodge ones and use the ones from my original Ford engine.

Do you guys know anyone that is using the ford zf5? I would like to know how much they had to move every thing. How well the fordcummins adapter plate works. I almost have my engine rebuilt. Any one know how much pressure the factory head bolts will hold?
