Yup exactly what red_rattler said you remove them through the hole where the starter is. I believe the last one I did it was a 3 inch extension with a 14mm(Please don't quote me on the size) deep socket on a 1/2 inch wrench and make sure to hold the flywheel from turning when breaking them loose.

The edge of the hole that the starter bolts to is dead center of the torque converter bolt which makes it impossible to get a socket on. The freightliner cummins has the starter on the passenger side of the motor versus the dodge that is on the drivers side. I don't know if this makes a difference, but I am stumped as how to get them out. Any and all help will be greatly appreciated.

i own 1997 freightliner fl70, to take torque converter you have to inspect more carefully the right side of engine on opposite site of starter, you will see i think four bolts(you'll have to move fuel lines out of the way it's going to be really close to fuel filter, if this will help!!!

i have one question to you, what is the top speed of your freightliner? i just rebuilt my transmission allison at 545 4-speed and my truck doesn't go more than 55mph on the freeway with 2500 rpm, i'm thinking probably it has speed limiter in it
