My friends....

IT IS ALIVE !!!

Got it started last nite using the mercedes electronics ; Unfortunately it had a fuel leak so could only let it idle for less than 10 minutes !! Of , course it was 10 pm so I must go spend my day searching down the leak !!

GOtta GO !!! I am so stoked ; since it was not much louder than a common rail cummins and that was thru the straight pipe exhaust since I have not connected it to my stock JEEP muffler yet !!

and JOHN .....

Find an specialty bolt company " S and L bolt " or " A and L Bolt " are what they are called here in my area .......... Take your stock crank bolt and they can match it up easily !!

But , the grade 8 bolt in a 6 point or 12 point you will not find at Lowes or Home Depot !!!

hey john that starter will spin that engine with no problem.the gear teeth on it are the same as benz. and best part of all if it goes bad it is cheap to replace

glad to hear you got the engine running.what do you mean mercedes electronics? those engines are quiet.i run my thru straight side pipe and it is not bad at all

I reused the Mercedes Glow Plug timer and have integrated it into the jeep electronics !!

also there was some kind of power distribution block that I robbed from the donor car so I did not have 20 wires all hooked to the battery terminal or starter !! Sorry ; I should have taken pics of this to post for ya'll to see !!

This is the only electronics there is ...... UNTIL I get bored and decide to hook up the " CRUISE CONTROL " This is gonna be the last vehicle I own and on the highway I thought the cruise control would be a nice touch on those long drives out west to " EASTER JEEP SAFARI " !!

ALSO ..... Vlado .... I see what you are saying with needing to regear !! 5th gear is absolutely USELESS !! I am gonna see if I have enough time to throw in the 4.10 geared Dana 44's before my surgery !! And install the Rough Country 2 1/2 inch lift it is only $449but that is a small price to pay to keep the front diff from putting a hole in my oil pan !!

I found the fuel leak ..... all the 24 year old return lines were dryrotted and diesel was pouring thru them !! Changed them out and good to go !! BUT ; I have an oil leak NOW and it seems to be coming from where the Injection Pump attaches at the block !! It is a pretty healthy leak !! I need to install a 2 1/2 inch suspension lift since the oil pan is almost touching the front diff and I was worried it had made contact with the pothole laden Louisiana roadways !! Is there a gasket that has dryrotted or do I just need to tighten the attaching bolts ( I only see 2 bolts ) ???

oooh those electronics, that is what i used too. i had to replace all my return lines but i runned that engine when it was in donor car so i knew i had leaks before putting it in. on your oil leak from pump.i have 3 bolts that hold that pump to block and there is gasket there but i think that nose of pump may have o-ring too (but not sure)pump mounting is triangular shape and each corner has bolt so you are missing one.that could be your only problem.also before you go replacing parts check that thing out realy good. i had problem with oil leak when i had my engine running,i plugged breather nipple on top of valve cover to steam clean engine and my valve cover gasket leaked (healty leak).
i see you have cone type air filter and your breather tube is goung straight to down tube and into pan,but i think you should have another T to air cleaner too. at least that is what original air cleaners have.
all i am saying is your engine may not be breathing right and that is why you have bad leak, and that gasket being old and possibly missing bolt will make it weak link.
also before you throw in 44's dana on your jeep take some time and figure out exactly which gear ratio you need by formula.you need to make up your mind what that jeep is going to be used for,and shoot for top gear speed limit that you want to be at. in other words you want to be @70 mph in 5 th gear @3000 rpm's (EXAMPLE ONLY) than find your gear ratio that is going to put you there and go from there. if you want your jeep to be rock crawler and dont care for hiway use you gear it for that aplication then. gear ratio is going to play huge role in your fuel consumption.

i hope this helps you and keep up the good work

Thanks Vlado ,

You are such a good friend !! Is the third bolt underneath ? I only looked quickly from the top and noticed the two and the leak appears to be coming from between the IP and the head where the IP bolts to the block !! I found some " mercedes engine oil sealing " info and it said the 1987 up models had an O-ring to seal it ; but did not mention pre-1987 !!

But thank you my friend !!! If there is anything I can ever help you with ..... let me know !!

As I said ; this is gonna be a multi use ( road and trail ) but max tire will be 33 to 35 inch !! I have the rear dana 44 with 4.10's and I thought it was a good " starting " point with the 31 inch tire I am presently running ( I am very happy with the 31 PROCOMP X-TERRAINS and will not remove them till they wear out !) If I need to go higher like 4.56 or so ; I can do so later !! And when I hit the trail I will throw the 35's on with a more aggressive tread pattern ...... Maybe the MTR with Kevlar!!!

I'm so psyched to see the successes Vlado and Hulkgreen!!!! I will finally be done with Engineering school in March and will have the time to play with mine again. Already found my new MJ donor body to replace the flooded one, and have been given more time to get the YJ dieseled-up. I'm so excited to see things going so well!!

(btw, hulk, you have your surgery yet? Get off your duff and get back to work!!)

Oh, and even though it would be a "hind-sight" kinda thing, my buddy now has a 240D with the 4-spd manual trans. Hopefully I'll get the opportunity to pull it out and take a few measurements and photos so we can at least see what the stock mercedes clutch parts look like.

Hulkgreen - what did you use for your bell housing adapter plate? I think Vland used 5/16" steel. Yours looks like it is aluminum? 1/2" ? Also, what did you use for your flywheel adapter? It also looks like aluminum.

I am in the process of measuring and putting into AutoCad the measurements for the OM617. ...then on to mating the trans. I'm gonna be mating mine up to a T-4 trans. of my '86 CJ-7. Hoping i can get pretty accurate measurements so I can hand a machine shop my cad drawings and have them crank out a template for me. Will keep you guys posted.
