I found the right size pilot bearing for my Jeep input shaft for a T-18, it is off of an 89 Ford F150 2wd with 5.0L. I was planning on machining a piece like what you have hulk (have a lathe so this will not be hard). What material did you use to make the pilot bearing adapter? looks like aluminum??
Here is a pic of the 4th cylinder that threw a rod and yes I got the whole car for free not bad just cost me fuel to drive 300 miles to pick it up.

Nice work, but wouldn't it be easier to swap in a Cherokee 2.5Td engine? I have seen several YJ's with a Diesel engine here in Europe. It is a direct swap with the exception of the two front engine mounts. Direct fit to the AX15 trans. Just have a look at the Liberty down at the Dieselbombers to see the engine.I posted a pic.

OM617 into Cherokee
Hello all,
I am new here. I bought a 300SD recently and plan on putting the engine and trans in a 1985 Cherokee. Do you have to modify the front crossmember to clear the sump on the Benz oil pan? I was hoping it would clear without cutting anything. I was going to have the Jeep driveshaft modified to fit the output shaft of the Benz trans.

Diesel Jeep
I got the 300SD today, pulled the motor and trans. I think I will do like Vlado and use the Jeep trans behind the Benz engine. The jeep has a 2.8 Chevy V6 and a TH700R4 trans. The bellhousing pattern looks pretty similar on both trannies. I may be able to drill the bolt and dowel pin holes in the GM trans bellhousing and drill the GM torque converter holes in the Benz flywheel. The Jeep is four wheel drive too, so I would not have to screw around with custom drive shafts and reengineering the trans crossmember mount. Here are some pics of the 300SD, the engine, and the Jeep that will receive it.

How much work is it to remove the front diff from the Jeep and convert it to two wheel drive? That would give me more clearance for the 617 oil pan and make the vehicle lighter. Then I could have a driveshaft made to mate the Benz trans to the Jeep rear diff. Just throwing out ideas. I don't really need four wheel drive, I just need an enclosed vehicle to haul items.

Adapter Kit
I found a company that sells an adapter kit to bolt an OM617 to a 700R4 trans for the 2.8. That is the trans that's in the Cherokee. The kit is $925, it comes with the adapter plate, a high torque mini-starter, and a custom made torque converter that bolts to the stock Benz flywheel/flexplate. It's kind of pricey, but it would save me an awful lot of work. I would still have to figure out the motor mounts, but not mess with driveshafts or the speedometer. I am thinking of buying it for my project. I could always sell the Benz auto trans to recoup some of my money.
