Bad News is .... Back has 4 buldging discs !

Good News is .... They are not causing the pain ..... I pulled a muscle and it is healing ( went to get out of bed and had very little pain !! )

Doc says WHEN they start causing pain let him know and he will gladly fix it !!

Hey Vlado,

Just spoke with ya on the phone .....

I am lookin at your pics of the bellhousing and engine and comparing to my bell...... My 94 bell does not look anything like yours !! In 1987 Jeep used a Peugot transmission and YOU must have that BellHousing. For the crank to fit in the middle of the bell puts the starter hitting on the lowest outcropping of the aluminum part of the Mercedes oil pan. I can't offset it far enough not to hit and still get the trans stabbed into the crank !! I am back to the Dakota Bell cause it appears to fit fine ..... Will compare what the Dakota starter looks like in the Dakota bell when mated to my MOCK UP of the Mercedes tomorrow when I get home from work!!!

I see now what ya mean by wingin it and see what fits !!?? Wish me luck!!

Hey , BTW , I really appreciate being able to talk to ya about this !! Thank you !!

I promised you some mock up pics showing the starter relationship !!

There is plenty of room and it is down below the oil filter and away from the Turbo's HEAT !!

I even bolted the Dakota's Bellhousing to the Jeep AX-15 for craps and giggles today !!

I have been considering this swap for a long time. Looks like I am getting a 300D the end of this month from my uncle who had put one out to pasture. Said it ran 3 years ago and if I want it to get it out of his yard.

I will continue to follow this awesome thread. Thanks for all the great ideas.

If you can put a bolt on front of crank and breaker bar to turn it over ( be sure trans is in neutral ) you should have a GREAT candidate...... Mine had sat for 3 years also .... I did change the head gasket due to oil weepage at back of head and inspected ( everything ) just for longevity of my project....... but there was nothing wrong with anything......

YEE--HAW !!! OBAMA APPROVAL #'S HAVE DROPPED TO 47% ...... MORE THAN 5 % IN WEEK AND HALF !!!

Were you thinking something like an adapter ?????

I have a pic of the completed piece and you only HAVE to use 6 and not all 12 Mercedes crank holes !! And the extra large hole in the middle is for a JEEP pilot bushing and here is a link to it .... you can get it at ORIELLY for $11.99 don't accept the 10.99 one it is too small !! This pilot is basically the conversion if your engine came with an auto trans and you are converting to Manual trans !!

Picked up my 300D on Saturday got it home and found that the engine threw a rod out the bottom of the block , not too disappointed it was free. But that is not all bad can use some of the parts to fit a 617 engine I found this weekend for sale running for $300..

Going to pick it up beginning of next month.

hulkgreen is that a Jeep pilot bushing? is so what does it go on or a part# THANKS

Also how big is the hole for the input shaft i am having trouble finding the right size to fit my transmission

Great price !! Is that for the whole car ?? There are other incidentals you can use from a donor car to save money !!

It is a Federal Mogul / National part the # is FC -69907... it is to convert an auto trans engine to a manual trans !!

You do have an AX-15 .... RIGHT !!

As I remember the input shaft for the Jeep is like 0.75 and Mercedes is like 0.59 and I checked ( TRUST ME there is no one making an off the shelf pilot bearing to go from Mercedes crank hole to Jeep input shaft !!!

That is why my machinist made the flywheel adapter and incorporated a COMMON pilot bushing hole in it !!!

wow i have been away from this site a while.hulk i am going to try to answer your questions.
hulk i see you have cardboard adapter plate up in place and bell housing bolted on. you cardboard looks too big.my adapter plate doesnt come close to that,or my flywheel for that matter.also what kind of lift you have on jeep?that starter ear looks too close to driveline.you are right pics are worth a thousand of words, but only if you have something to prove.
also the reason i used all 12 mercedes bolts is because i had 12 bolts and 12 holes, you can use 6 bolts, you can use 4 bolts or 2 for that matter it doesn't matter it is just what you feel comfortable using.
about the pilot bearing, you are right nobody is making bearing to go from mercedes crank to jeep input shaft.bearing i posted earlier in this thread is only match for OD of mercedes crank and you have to drill center for your own pilot bearing to fit.
you seem to have a project on your hands that is for sure, but you get the bragging rights after you make it work and run it for a while.

good luck with your project and keep up the good work
