Om617 96 Jeep Cherokee build thread
#63
Some new developments are being made over on STD forum that could be a game changer for the om617, 100% more fuel would push this engine to another level. I'm watching this closely.
OM617 MW pump experiment

That's not the only valve that can be used from the donor car, valves that function the same way can be found in the dash and control the AC/heat.

[QUOTE=Evenglass;1061702]Thank you sir, I know many have moved away from this engine as a swap candidate for various reasons but I still believe the om617 is the best all around diesel engine for smaller Jeeps if done correctly. I will continue to journal here to share how this works out in the long run. QUOTE]
I agree that the MB OM617.951/952 is a great conversion candidate for all the reasons mentioned: cost, economy, ease of install, power, smell, clatter etc. When school gets out in a few weeks here in Clearwater, I will begin completing my install too. I have spent the last 2 months and about 2K$ meticulously going through my 1983 -951 engine from top to bottom with lots of powder coating. It purrs like a lost kitten in a bath tub of fresh milk 1991 YJ with an AX5 trans. Not planning on anything more than a casual off road experience but mostly around town driving. I haven't been able to find Mount Florida yet so I am not sweating the AX5 trans. I live at 7' MSL, har! I will start my own thread when the swap starts in earnest in June. Thanks for letting me tag a word or two here on this thread.

Looks great! I like the powder coating. Is that the 120amp Saab 900x alternator? Looks like you have the Garret turbo, adjust the waste gate now as its a real pain later. I had to shorten the down pipe in mine between the turbo flange and the first bend down. I'd adjust the injection pump timing while it's out too. Nice to hear your in Clearwater, I'm about two hours away in Sebring. It would be cool to get together after it's done and hit some trails. Good luck with your build, let me know if I can help. Feel free to hijack this thread any time.

Just a new stock Benz alternator. I didn't become enlightened on the Saab upgrade until after I bought this one, oops I changed the pump timing from 24 degrees BTC to 26 degrees before TDC. I considered removing the fuel stop in the pump but have decided to leave it alone for now. I have removed the fuel stop in my CAT 3208 turbo powered RV. Boy, what a difference! I completely eliminated the EGR by sawing it off and welding the aluminum intake manifold and plugging the exhaust outlet hole. Looks much cleaner. I will play with the ALDA when the time comes too and probably remove it too. I have wondered about the turbo outlet to pipe length before the bend?
I get down to Wauchula from time to time, maybe we can do lunch some time this summer? Thanks for the highjack offer too

I'll take you up on your lunch offer when your ready. Don't remove the fuel stop!(rack limiter in Mercedes) The rack limiter serves as more than a fuel stop in these pumps. Your filter housing and engine mounts are different, what did that engine come out of?

[QUOTE=Evenglass;1061772]The motor is out of a 1983 300SD that had a bad transmission. Motor mounts are the stock aluminum ones having the torque rings sawed off as was suggested by the frame mount manufacturer. Lunch it is
