Ok the first cycle of glow is the one you start the engine immediately after as soon as the light goes off the first time.
The short sets of glow light that happen after that are called afterglow and are meant to happen when the engine is already running. If you wait for the glow light to stop blinking completely before starting, you are causing your own hard start situation-because by that time the plugs are already cold and no longer aid in starting. |
Ok well I'll change the glow plugs and see what does they have to be changed anyways , would the glow plugs cause any of these problems that we have been talking about ?

Sorry been away for a few days and couldn't answer.
Glow plugs are often responsible for hard starting or a lot of cranking when you see a lot of smoke from the tailpipe when starting. PMD's are also responsible for no starts and stalling along with runaway conditions sometimes. |
Ok all the glow plugs seem to be fine I took everyone out and tried them and they all worked, but I have more problems now umm ok I stared my truck on Friday and went to go hunting and I got a mile out of town and the truck was running rough as hell and the water in fuel light came on so I drained the fuel bleed off valve and te fuel looked murky as hell so me and a buddy took te whole tank off and cleaned it out th started it and everything seemed to be fine. So then today I went to go hunting again so I started it up In the morning and let it run for a sec then took off then it stalled so I started it again then it ran for 10 sec then died again so I did the same thing again started it then it died, I was going about 40 mph at is this time and the truck is a standerd so it just keeps stalling then firing right up again then stalling and firing up again, so after the 10 time it stayed running for my hr long highway drive, the as soon as I got in home in my driveway it stalled again . So this has happend 4 times now what the hell is going on here ? I put my pmd right begind my front bumper so I know it isn't getting hot and, that shouldn't be th case anyway bc this happens in the mornings when it is cold or after it has sat for hours, like it runs fine when it's on the hwy after I get those first 10 stalls out of the way,

Good chance you have air getting in the fuel between the tank and LP?
Also when draining water from the filter use the brass Tee valve mounted to the water crossover at the frt of the engine. It drains from the bottom of the filter housing where the water settles. A new fuel filter is mandatory when water gets in the fuel. Also a double dose of lubricity additive in the fuel is needed after the IP gets some water run through it-helps injectors also. When testing the glows-within 8 seconds they should glow their whole length-if only the tip glows they are not up to snuff. |
So I got the codes checked and I have the p1216 fuel solenoid response time to short code come up . And I just went to start it again and it started fine then tied right away then I tried starting it again and I had to turn it over for 10 sec and no fire so I turned the key back to the off posission and the. Let the glow plugs do there thing and then she fired right up and actually ran for more the. 10 sec, then all of a sudden it reved up just for a split sec then kept on running for about 5min so I grabbed every wiring harness that I could and wiggled it and I got no stall or no shorted wire so I just shut the truck off . So I hope this is enough info for you to tell me what the hell is wrong here
---AutoMerged DoublePost--- I understand that air could be the problem but wouldn't it still stall when I was driving down the hwy ? And I did use the t valve to drain the water and used that additive and as for the glow plugs I put new ones on. On one side and they had the same glow as the old ones so I assumed the old ones where good but I do have a code coming up p0380 glow plug circuit performance ? So what does that Mean ? |
First I have heard of the glow plug code so can't say for sure-just make sure that you have power to each glow plug and that you start the truck as soon as the glow light goes out the first time.
The additional glow lights are afterglow and are intended to happen when the engine is running-otherwise the glow plugs will be too cold to start the truck. Also Bosch Duratherm are the only glow plugs to use on these engines-even the AC Declco 60G's are not as good as the duratherms. The p1216 is likely due to water going through the IP-double up on lubricity additive and add some marine 0 ash 2 cycle oil at 1-200 or even 1-100 ratio for a couple of tanks of fuel. Otherwise there might be an IP problem. |
I don't think I can get it to run that long tho to burn that much fuel tho lol I don't trust it, but yah it couldn't be the pmd ? Don't those act up like this ? And you think that Thw truck would stall all the time of it where the pump not just when I start it in the morning or after its been sitting for a few hrs the glow plugs should have noting to
Do with the stalling tho |
I would say the stalling is related to the watery fuel making the fuel solenoid stick-that's why the fuel additive sometimes helps.
PMD's do cause stalling, extra amps from a sticky fuel solenoid can help kill a PMD maybe? Air in the fuel can also cause stalling and stumbling/fishbiting. Make sure that the filler cap is properly vented and the LP is working. |
What's the best way to see if the lift pump is working an what's the best way to see if there is a hole in the line after te lift pump isn't it all compression fittings ?
