Your panel should have a serial plate that will tell you what it is made for. As far as a new service, it would be a great choice to upgrade. I see you have underground, does it come down a riser or pipe on an overhead line? This can limit your choices, or make the utility company get fancy with the hookup. If you have an overhead line near your shop it would be a easy hookup and easy on the pocket book from the utility company. If the entire area is all underground it gets more involved.

Most likely the utility will only offer two different setups, 120/208/240 delta 4wire, 120/208 Y 4wire. Now the installation can be alot of different ways.

Like I said above, it would be a great upgrade, but you would also want to ask about rate increases and demand changes, these can vary greatly especially if you arent all electric, say if you also have gas service for heat.

Has anything I said been wrong? :P I tried not to provide him with any incorrect information... my career path plans to be a lineman and I want to make sure everything I've studied is right.

What you said about 120/208/240... I have a question for you I'll pm you.

Well you can have a 3 phase pad mount which will be 120/208Y. Or they can set apole or enclosure and build a 2 or 3 pot bank in 120/240 delta with a 208 power leg.
