You can also use a piece of rubber hose/ tubing and listen to specific parts of the engine.

Well , it's not in the valve train , going under for a look at the bell housing/TC bolts after i eat some supper.

I used the handle of a hockey stick to listen to certain spots , i could not really pinpoint any one spot the noise seemed to be coming from, from the top of the engine.


Have I mentioned that i picked this beauty up for 500 bucks? 99 Grand Cherokee. I hope it is something simple , but worst case scenario, I can get a used long block from a friend for 200 bucks, he owned the jeep from new , until he parted it out this winter.

Guys , you are not going to believe this...

I got it fixed , it was a LOOSE TORQUE CONVERTER BOLT.... picture to come...

It's going to be a little more in depth than i figured, i think the bolt has bent the top edge of the flywheel cover, so i think i am going to have to drop the trans out to find what the bolt is hitting on , i tightened it back in , and the noise changed some , but it is still there.

Still better than tearing out the engine IMO glad you found out the problem.
