Why dont you like the detroit? just wondering.

The detroit 8.2 four cycle engine was put out in 82 for the medium truck industry and had problems right out of the box with blown head gaskets. they increased the head bolt size to try to keep them together with little improvement. they will stay together in a NA 185 hp cofiguration. my unit was a 1986 230 hp turbo engine and they are known to blow head gaskets if you get them just a little hot on a hill there all done. Just one injector is 249.00 and you need a unavalible tool to set the rack, not to mention the block has no sleeves and needs to be decked when rebuilt because the block "pulls up" at the bolt holes in the block so just putting gaskets on like the PO did on mine only lasts untill you can get it to the dealer to trade it in. Only one outfit would rebuild my 8.2 with a guarantee and they are in michigan and it ran 12000,00 plus shipping. They only build 210 hp engine for trucks because they wont live at any higher output. All I want is a good solid engine that will bolt up and run with no electronics the IDI is what I found and now I will build one that will work for my application.

Thats cool i like your doing sumthing different im a cummins guy but i find interest in all diesels. I love the old 2 stroke detroits also its one of my favorite sounding engines, what other engines were you considering besides the 7.3:pca1:

Same here. I want a 6v53 in something.

racer30 03-10-2011 09:59 PM

well I looked at putting a 6v53t in the mh but the 2cycle diesel is more dificult to work on than the IDI so it made more sence to go with the 4 cycle engine. just need to build it. With the wife out of work and going to college, the money is tight right now so baby steps in the right direction will get me there. already got 4 engines for parts, I will be putting some stuff up for sale soon and with work picking up I will be making more money for the stuff I need to buy for this project.

I just like the two strokes because of the coolness. Love the fact that they're old school and they sound awesome :rocking:

Bump ... Alright been running lots of numbers on the dyno again. Got lots of info on the heads and turbo this time around to get more accurate results. even did some exhaust system comparissons just to be verry close to the factory stock baseline numbers. so I have a good place to start my performance upgrades. I will be putting all this together into a bunch of graphs and data sheets for uploading to the site in the next few weeks. the stock cam numbers are much better this time now that I have comfirmed the specs on a engine block that had the heads off using my new dial indicator to check the valve timing. so keep a eye on this thread or I might start a new one with the new info.:humm::pca1:

BUMP OK well I have been sick with the flu for about 10 days now and the worst part about it was my mouse cord was eaten by a puppy so the computer was down till I could replace it. got a new wireless Rocketfish mouse. been putting together some stuff on word to import over to post, not finished with the graphs yet. the wife is using the computer alot for her homework, so I don't get alot of time to compile data for the reports, I will put up the info when its done. thanks for waiting. :tu:
