More of a dodge thing than a cummins thing.
I've owned every cab and box combo dodge makes. Currently i have a mega cab. I have a utility trailer in case something doesn't fit in the shortbox. It is well worth giving up a long box to have that extra cab room (4 me), if you have a trailer or a loaner you can get a hold of. I have some friends in the 6'+ 300lb+ range and they say it is the only vehicle they have ever rode in where the back seat is comfortable for extended rides. The kidz love the extra room and there is plenty of room for all the stuff they need on a trip to entertain them, which is directly related to my sanity. Even the largest suitcase will fit behind the rear seat.
If ya read around the forums you'll see some of the following issues.
Head gasket blowing, seems like this is mostly on modified trucks towing heavy loads, small turbine inlet port may be causing excessive back pressure which is exasperated by adding more fuel and air. I've read some posts where after a gasket or two they have added waste gates to help lower back pressure. Some report this solving thier problem. Best solution is probably to do it b-4 ya have a problem and get a set of head bolts while you're at it. I don't even run my tuner on the highest setting as I have not added the bolts yet.
Have read about some turbos that seem to have some problems that may be atributable to the DPF/EGR system. Sooting and overheating, possibly from the injection of fuel on the exhaust cycle during regen. Deleting the system and a tuner will stop the regen cycle.
Read one post and some advertisement about the EGR system and worring about it dumping cooling water into the engine. Think this was a ford problem in the past more than a dodge problem, solved with 100 dollar delete, well worth it.
Lots of people report problems with the DPF and EGR system in one way or another. The only things i've found in common in most of those posts is the dealer doesn't want to deal with it or can't figure out whats wrong and the problem seems to repeat itself because the real cause isn't found. Getting rid of them if you can, seems to be the best solution and the aftermarket vendors have it nailed down pretty well.
Tony, Brice, Luke, and Scott (sorry if I missed somebody) are all very active on the forums offering help all the time. They will save ya some headaches and money in the long run if ya read what they have posted.
Look up any of the post about problems that vendors are posting in, they offer solutions over and over. The best solution i've seen is fix the issues b-4 they start problems in other parts of the engine.
Most of the advise boiled down seems to lead to, delete the dpf/egr system if ya can in your area, use a good quality tunner, and if you're towing/heavy footed get a waste gate and some head bolts b-4 ya hurt the engine not after. If ya go much further with mods than that get some love for the tranny.
The EGR/DPF delete and tuner combo I did dramatically improved my MPG.
