I can't see how it would hurt, not sure how much it would help at the same time though... Only one way to find out!

A few years back on my 1st, 1st gen, I enlarged the hole in my airbox to about 4" by 9"ish, and the factory inlet on the rad support was enlarged to that size also. I used a chunk of stove pipe squished pretty much square to join the airbox to the opening. Turbo response was a bit quicker at highway speeds, but I had to keep turning the K@N cause it'd get dirty mostly in the one spot. I guess a piece of screen over the ovening would have helped somewhat. I drove through some bad rainstorms, filter stayed pretty much dry. The stove pipe was angled down about 30 degrees, which kept water from directly hitting the filter at speed, I'm guessin. The grille covers up the top 1/3 of the opening. Usin the same rad support and airbox in my 90, minus the stove pipe.

i took my entire air intake out and even the little plate at the bottom and it opens up a hole in your gril that looks like its for another head light or blinker then i went to dnrcustoms.com and bought his intake system for my first gen it fits right there where that hole is and my truck runs alot better it runs cooler get better fuel economy and i gaind 2 psi of boost just from the extra air i dont know if its the best on the market butt for 150 bucks i like it
