Default Factory air to water aftercooler

Finally found a set of really nice injections lines and factory air/water aftercooler.. Was mainly just wanting the lines so i could build a full length intake. The cooler is in great shape was wondering if anyone here is running one and if there very restrictive? Im running a custom 3 1/2" air to air now . Would it be as good ? Better with seprate pump and cooler atatched? I have been looking for info on it but cant find much.. The truck is a 89' ported polished second gen head , pod's , hx35/40 hybrid, pump maxed. Im wanting to install a bigger turbo and injectors along with a new industral VE thats getting calibrated for max fuel and set at 18° . Not sure on turbo yet buddy has a hx 52 he wants to sell me . and prob 5x14's What do you guys think? Sorry for the long post!! Thanks.

Your gonna need a water supply, while the factory post radiator coolant will work for the best results you should use an ice water setup, put atank of some sort in the bed with ice water and a 12v pump.

old detriots, and marine applications use an aftercooler. i've even seen some older CATs in the oil field that still use them. but bobbys idea of post radiator coolant, or its own cooling system runnin thru an ice box is about as good as it gets. but i think they got away from aftercoolers on vehicles due to weight, complexity, and reliability. but that's pretty cool KTA has resurrected aftercoolers, but liquid has much better heat transfer properties so it makes perfect sense.

Yeah an ice box will get your CRAZY cool air but its only good for short periods. Putting a small heater core in the return line under the truck will help keep teh water around ambient temp.

I was thinking about a large tranny cooler plumbed before the ice box . and maybe a 12" fan on the cooler . I would not need ice that often but would be nice 2 be able to just top it off any time.. maybe run metanol or washer fluid so i dont have to worrie about freezing?? Im sure even with the engine coolant it would pry be more efficent than my current intercooler . It works pretty good for just daily driving but its a e-bay special ricer unit biggest one i could find and it fits nice in the n/ic front end.

Is KTA on this fourm? I remember seeing post from him a few years ago but just recently got back into messing with my cummins again ...

USe a radiator out of a small car or a LARGE heater core. Tranny cooler wont be big enough. Just run antifreeze through teh system.

A/C condensor could work too.

Over an extended period of operation, like driving up a long grade, the amount of heat that the system will be able to reject is still limited to the surface are of the finny cooler. So to have the air-to-water cooler work as well as an air-to-air cooler over a 100% duty cycle, the radiator in the air-to-water circuit would need to have the same surface area as the intercooler in the air-to-air circuit.

What air-to-water circuits are good at is absorbing a large quantity of heat over a short period of time. Dynoing, drag racing, sled pulling. Marine applications have an unlimited supply of cold water, so it works there great too. Otherwise, for a heavy-duty duty-cycle, do not scrimp at all on the finny cooler size.

i work at a diesel machine shop. most if not all the bigger engines we see use a water to air aftercooler, i tend to think they didn't use them in pickups because of the size, some of the ones on B Cummins stick up pritty far, which could lead to hood clearence issues. but if you can make one fit it should work great
