Funny thing: when I was researching which way to go, compound or single, the single promoters (shops and vendors) always got real quiet when I would press for info about EGT control or I would get told "well after you buy our turbo you can upgrade to compounds..". Especially when towing, you simply will not beat the performance of compounds.
10k for the parts??? They gold plated??? Compounds, inter cooler and trans didn't put me to that point. Kits using the stock turbo can be had from around $1600 to maybe $4000.
As far as trans...alot of that choice is preference, however, from a $$ & cents view, price a replacement manual after it grenades (literally) in addition to the clutch....there's a reason I have a 48re....

I just got an old st-50 Cummins turbo which is very similar but older and not as good as the hx60 or ht60. 3.125 inch inlet wheel it was between 79 and 80mm. I'm set on building a compound setup and it's gonna happen. Many people will say these old turbos are junk but if you make your setup right I believe they work good. The only other person I can find that has ever done a st-50 setup on a cummins was told it was junk and pointless and it turned out to be a powerhouse he was happy with from what I could find. So fab your own setup and go show what you can do with your ability and that scrap turbo when your capable of lots of power and retain drivability.
