I have a 2003 cummins 5.9. I just bought it from a dealer, it was traded in and the dealership did not know what had been done to it.

So far I know that it has:
Banks inner cooler
Banks high-ram air horn
Air Dog lift pump

I believe it has a programmer on it but I really don't know.
The turbo also doesn't look stock (See picture)

I have a lot of black smoke coming out at low RPMS. My exhaust temp climbs fast without a load on it. I don't see any boost out of the gauge until about 2500-3000 RPMS. If I have the truck in 6th gear the RPMS are low and all I get is black smoke and the EGTs climb to atleast 1100 and then I let off the throttle. It doesn't have a waste gate actuator (Also pictured)

Can anyone shed some light on what the issue could be? I included a picture of this turbo and the wastegate.

 

From the look of it it's been on there a long time! First check for boost leaks! What are your plans for the truck? Towing playing DD? Then inspect the turbo. Let me know what you find!

Do you have a digital screen that has gauges on it? or a box under the hood that says Edge,Quadzilla, Banks,or Bully dog on it? That would be the programmer.

 

sounds turbo-ish. what kind of numbers are you getting once the turbo does spool? Check the intercooler boots for leaks, and check all connections from your exhaust manifold to the down pipe. if it is a turbo issue, let me know...I have one in my spare bedroom that my wife uses as a doorstop. It's in great condition.
