DirtyDozen is very correct in that the overdrive spring can take your blame head off! There are a couple of ways to address the issue with the overdrive section that DirtyDozen refers to.

1- One can get a cage that works with an arbor press (like DirtyDozen speaks of). Placing the OD section in the press with the cage on top allows one to compress the big spring safely while removing the retainer C-rings.

One can also get a cage that has it's own mounting bracket and allows one to compress the big spring without an arbor press.

Either way, once the spring is compressed, one simply has to remove the two C-rings to allow full disassembly.

Lifting the clutch-packs out of the way exposes the overdrive spring.

NOTE: Prior to reassembly, one will need to align the splines of the clutch-packs and overdrive planetary so as to allow the completed assembly to slide back onto the intermediate shaft. One can use the existing intermediate shaft (if your trans is fully taken apart) or use the tool that comes with the arbor type cage.

BE CAREFUL!

ok i've busy but now i'm getting to every one. the guy that said i have a 700r4, first its a dodge and that tranny is for chevy, and they r JUNK. but i stripped the planitary gear and broke the aluminum housing for that broke in two, more or less every thing broke. ok for the fix i got a steel 5 gear planitary, and a 6 gear, billet HD torque converter, borg warner and ray besto clutches, and everything swapped to a second gen 618 tranny. million times better in driving quality and shifting. 2400$

you'll be happier with the 618. I had a 1st. gen '93 with the 518, basicly they are a 727 with a forth gear added. I had mine rebuilt 3 times before I got smart and did it right. I kept blowing my forth gear out, finally I spent a bunch of $$$ and picked up a complete rebuild kit from DTS with kevlar frictions and a better torque converter. mine kept burning the overdrive section. I had my tranny completly rebuilt by a good reputable shop I think I was into it about 3k for everything... my motor was warmed up alittle bit with a Banks power pak kit, larger injectors,a haleset turbo, a reworked rotary injection pump advanaced about 1.75 deg. and a straight 4" pipe out the back. this thing would cook... unfortunatly it would cook my overdrive up. I was not towing any heavy loads maybe 10k at the most. those first gens had very few problems but they did eat trannys alot. I finally sold it and bought a ford 6.0... oooooh well now I have a different set of issues. GOOD LUCK.
