Steering Box Help..Please!
Hey guys, recently purchased a 1992 D250 4x4. Steering box and coupler housing had some serious play. I ordered a REMAN AC Delco box locally thinking it would be quickest solution. 3 days later i still can't figure out what's wrong.
First picture i've uploaded is the application i've seen all over the internet. (Take note to where the shaft coupler connects to the splines on the box)
Second picture is similar to what i've received only not as pretty.(Again take note to where the shaft coupler connects to the splines on the box)
Second picture has a little nipple so to speak off the shaft that connects to the coupler. This will not allow my steering shaft coupler to connect to the box. Have sent back 2 boxes and the third today is the same thing. WTF am i missing? This is getting very very frustrating. Can i just cut that nipple off the shaft and connect my coupler? Very tempted.
Please help a drooling old goat owner.
Thanks.
Oh and i'll attatch a picture of the old turd.

Maybe its from a different year model? Not familiar with Dodge steering gear boxes only GM's, have not had to mess with mine yet, but will have to soon, have some play somewhere and suspect the gear box too, you sure your linkage is good? Can you just tighten up the gears on the adjustment on the old box or do you know about doing that? I believe you could on the Dodge's cause you can on the older Chevy's boxes.

As far as I know like the Chevy's box you back off the locking nut and turn in the center adjustment screw and take the slack out and retighten the locking nut and it should take out the play, don't get the gears too tight or it will be hard to steer.

I'm just not complete understanding your problem, as I have not messed with one before but know how to take slack out of one. Mine has 400,000 miles on it and I'm not going to replace it if I can adjust it, its a lot of trouble as you are finding out. I just have not worked on a Dodge that much-YET.

I know to much about these trucks.

Try this on your stock box for now. http://www.off-road.com/jeep/tech/po...ent-20047.html

The box is buggered, leaks like a bastard so like I said replacing it didn't seem like a bad idea. People are saying second and third gen boxes will work on our trucks. I've cut that nipple off and got the box on but now it only steers to the right. Do I drop the pitman arm, count turns in my wheel. Divide in half and re attach my pitman arm??
Wtf is this nipple for? Hopefully it's not important, seems like a good fit now without it.
Thanks.
