Default Axle gear ratios

My truck has 4.10 gears and I have been thinking about going with 3.55. My 12 v dose not like going 75+ mph running at 2400+ rpm. Should I buy different gears or try and find complete axles with the different gears? Another option I'd like to go with is a 6 speed but that's another project for another day.

Axles are fairly expensive and in my area hard to find and then you would need to swap or replace front end parts as well as rear brakes and such. Also you don't know what you are getting when you buy them. On the other hand setting up gears is a chore to do right and takes some patience. You would need to do both ends and that's worse. What about a gear vendors overdrive? Have you looked at that? You could still use the lower gears for towing and have an extra overdrive on top.

I had forgotten they even exist!!! I have done axle swaps and gear swaps before nothing new to me. Axle prices around me are not terrible same with new gears. Both of witch are extremely cheaper than the GV overdrive. For a couple hundred to a thousand dollars cheaper I can get a 6 speed but only issue with that is trying to find a 6 speed. but thank you for the reply it did help me some.

a 6 speed is no higher geared than a 5 ... its just one LOWER gear .

if you buy just the gears , have a shop swap em ,, be around 1k .

gear vendor od will set you back 1500+ and then you have to have driveshafts modded .

I was just thinking that it would be nice to have the lower gears for towing the extra overdrive on top as well as being able to split the gears. Sounds great to me. I swapped in a Dana 80 Saturday. All said and done I have just under 1k in it, but I knew the guy that had it, and had swapped with him before. One of my neighbors just put a rearend in his truck and had to give 1800 for it, plus go to Texas and pick it up.

I'd love to run bigger tires but that would cost more in wheels and lift or level

33's fit on stock wheels. Many guys run 33's on stock height 2ndgens. Adding a coil spacer to the front isn't much cost or trouble.
